A national celebration was marred by tragedy on the night of 3 July with the shooting death of fourteen-year-old Tariq Akbar on Talossan soil. Akbar was shot and killed in northern Maritiimi-Maxhestic Province, in the shadow of the historic Water Tower, when he was caught between two groups of teenagers involved in a Facebook feud over a girl.
The shooting occurred as crowds of Cestours were leaving the Foundation Day fireworks show at the lakefront. Talossan law requires that a fireworks display be held on the shore of the Talossan Sea on a date between the birthday of King Robert I on 2 July and Organic Law Day on 6 July.
Matthew McMillan, only fifteen years old himself, was arrested the next day and has been charged as an adult with first-degree reckless homicide in Akbar's death. If convicted he faces up to 65 years in prison. So far this year, the homicide rate in Milwaukee as a whole is about twice last year's.
